Frank Latino, lecturer
Stacey Mastrian, soprano
Michael Mentzel, baritone
Daniel Sender, violin

Shelby Sender, piano

In this lecture-recital, Frank Latino will trace Gieseking’s career, provide an overview of his published and unpublished output, and explain the process of identifying and, in several cases, completing the unpublished compositions. The works programmed--all world premieres-- span Gieseking’s career and include a range of his Lieder, solo piano pieces (including the Variations on a Theme by Paganini), a four-hand composition, and a Scarlatti keyboard sonata transcribed for violin and piano. To help place the works in context, many slides will be shown of never-before-seen manuscripts, photographs, and other materials from Gieseking's personal collection in Germany. Ms. Mastrian and Ms. Sender perform the world premieres of three songs for voice and piano that Gieseking composed during World War I.
